Braving the Great
Outdoors and more...
With
the summer almost behind us, it's almost
time
to brave the cooler months outside to enjoy
a smoke. Now, add to that the cooling economy and you just KNOW the time
is right for a good way to stock up
on our favorite smokes before it gets
downright frosty.
In spite of a tough economy right now, sales
here at
the store were great during the months of
June and
July. Let’s face it, there are a lot of us
who are always
going to enjoy our cigars and pipes, even as
it can seem harder to afford them as "outside" factors yank more and more on our
wallet.
Well, we may have just the answer you were
looking for this month! Because, once again
this year we are happy to announce our
Mid-Summer Cigar Sale.
We have plenty of your favorites in stock
right now. We are stocked to the roof with new
arrivals from Sancho Panza, Gispert,
Macanudo, Diamond Crown, Onyx Reserve, Romeo
& Julieta and more.
Some of our best values right now include
those cigars from Puros Indios (now Reyes Family
cigars), Montesino and Sancho Panza. Most
all sizes in these cigars are less than $6.
(less
for those ordering from
out-of-state where our tobacco taxes do not apply).
For the pipe enthusiast, we have some great,
lower priced offerings, featured right now in our
Explorer series pipe tobaccos.
And don’t forget
that for all of you who have been faithful fans of Hobbit’s Weed©,
that we are
currently down to the
last 40 pounds we can produce. This great blend for over 30 years, is
moving out quickly so
don’t wait to order yours.
Let us take you on a personal tour of some of best buys the next time you
are in the store
or give us a call and we will walk you through by our old, but trusted,
telephone.

Reyes
Family Cigars
(Puros Indios)
Tewksbury &
Company owes a great deal to the Reyes Family. When we first opened the
store in 1996, we were in the middle of a cigar boom that had supplies at
the critical point for over 2 years. Thanks to the Reyes
Family we were able to keep up with the shortfalls and their products
(especially their Puros Indios brand) remain some of our best sellers now 12
years later.
Here is the story of this excellent cigar making family:
In 1938, Rolando went to work in Pinar del Rio in Cuba at the Jose L. Piedra
Cigar Factory in Guanajay. This was followed by work in Havana at the H.
Upmann Cigar Factory and later the Jose Gener & Batet Cigar Co. At these
factories he mastered the art of making "figurados" and "parejos" –
producing hand made cigars without a mold, as well as other techniques. He
then returned to Placetas in Las Villas to establish his own cigar factory
"Los Aliados". After several years he moved Los Aliados to Havana; he was barely
21. Rolando moved to the U.S. from Cuba and began making cigar again
by hand. Finally, in 1978, Rolando decided to move to the Dominican
Republic to produce his cigars. However, he found the overall quality to be
below his standards so he returned to New Jersey and continued to produce
cigars there until 1984. At that time he moved his operation to Miami. By
1988 he was ready to establish his factory in Honduras. He picked Danli to
relocate his operation because its conditions reminded him of Cuba, and he
finished the move in 1989.
In 2002, Rolando finished construction of a
new factory farther south from Danli than the previous one. The new Puros
Indios factory sits on a moderately sloped five acre plot, below his farm
and home. "Don Rolando" says he can now keep a closer eye on the factory, right
from his kitchen window. The new factory is built in the old Cuban tradition and
is the best in Honduras and, his friends believe, among the best in the
world. Rolando employs over 200 rollers and has over 300 employees producing
over 75,000 cigars daily of his various brands. He claims to be the only
factory owner who also retains the atmosphere of Cuban cigar factories of
old, by having a full-time lector to read the day’s news and other literature
to the rollers as they work. He continues to inspect all cigars manufactured in
his factory.
Rolando Reyes Sr. has been called "The world’s most talented
cigar maker". He continues to use the magic of his gifted hands to create
the world’s most highly sought-after cigars. Rolando Reyes Sr. considers
himself to be a genuine "Cuban Tobacconist" in the old tradition. He
continues to create premium cigars – refusing to lower quality, refusing to use
chemicals to fumigate, and refusing to use chemicals as aroma or taste
additives. Don Rolando embodies the term "old school" and is known as a
cigar legend by his peers and loyal customers around the world.

Where the fishing is Hot
After taking a two day fishing break last week, we have to share our success
on the Arkansas River. We were able to fish the river just below Salida and
downstream about 20 miles to Cotopoxi. Though the river was still a bit
high, we found fishing nothing short of superb.
Our best luck was
fishing a yellow or olive Stimulator with a Red Copper John dropper the
exact ticket. The key was to fish as close to the edge of the river as
humanly possible. On Monday alone, two of us landed over 75 fish. Unlike other
trips to the Ark over the past few years, we were able to land over 25 rainbows
along with the every present Browns. Don’t wait, this is the time to get out
and enjoy this excellent fishery.
Don’t Forget - Now’s The Time to Book That Flyfishing Trip:
Over the past month, we have had several groups joining us at the Bar ZX Ranch.
Our fall calendar is just packed for trips this September, but, weather
willing, we will be fishing the Bar ZX until early October. Don’t put it off
again, join us for some of the best trophy trout fishing in the U.S. today.

Two
Rivers ‘Grand Valley’
Cabernet Sauvignon
When we first tasted this delicious Cabernet Sauvignon we were reminded of
the luscious styles of Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley wines. This is a
superb example of what Colorado fruit can produce when it is handled
correctly and vinted by a top quality winemaker. The fruit is soft, but firm
and fills both the mouth and the nose with abundant hints of brambleberry
and blackberries. This wine will age well for the next 8-10 years and is one
of the best wines ever produced in Colorado in our opinion. $18.99 a
bottle or $205 for a case of 12. [ return to top ] |

John Rolfe’s Pride
- This fine blend is a tribute to the founder of pipe tobacco with roots in the
earliest days of the American Colonies. A tasty blend of Burley and Virginia
tobaccos highlighted with a hint of peach.
Freemont’s Fancy
- When we tasted this great new Black Cavendish tobacco we had to reflect back
on the pipe tobaccos of old. This is a nice broad-cut aromatic with excellent
flavors of rich coffees and chocolates. No burn and very easy to smoke without
burning out your palette.
The Virginian -
What more can we say. This is a blend of Golden
Cavendish and bright Burleys. A tasty dash of vanilla makes this an outstanding
combination that will please both the pipe smoker and those around him.
A Last
Goodbye... to Hobbit’s Weed
As we mentioned in our last newsletter, our
number one selling pipe tobacco is about to
pass away. This unique blend was the original
creation of Fred Severo who owned TO Bacco
in Thousand Oaks, California. Between Fred and
Dave, Hobbit’s Weed has become one of
the most sought after pipe tobaccos in the
country. One of our main bulk blending tobaccos
is being discontinued by the producer. We will
be working with other bulk tobacco producers
in an attempt to come up with the same taste,
but in this industry today, it is all about time.
We will keep you up to date as we know more. We
were able to blend up nearly 75 pounds
before the last bit was blended, but with the
large number of sales everyday, these few
precious last pounds will not last long.
As of
August 10 we now have just over 40 pounds left. Make sure you call your order in or
stop
by the store in the next few days to assure you will still have a bit for the months and
years to come. Thank you to each of you who have made Hobbit’s Weed our number one
seller
and a favorite of our customers from Antarctica to Alaska.

BLOWING
SMOKE UP OUR...
Telling the Truth about Secondhand
smoke. (reprinted from the
2007 Surgeon General’s report on Secondhand

you may have read in the papers, or

the Surgeon General of the United States
had to say about the
following health issues, as detailed in
his latest Report on
Secondhand smoke and tobacco:
Fertility and pregnancy —
There is no conclusive evidence linking
secondhand smoke to:
reproductive capabilities in women or men,
spontaneous abortions, infant deaths, including
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Preterm delivery, low birth weight,
birth defects, and child development issues —
There is no conclusive evidence linking
secondhand smoke to:
preterm (premature)
deliveries, birth defects, low birth
weights, effect brain development, Attention Deficit or
Hyperactivity Disorders (ADD and ADHD),
childhood cancer, childhood leukemia, childhood
lymphoma or childhood asthma.
Adult illnesses and other health
issues—there is no conclusive evidence linking

Friday September 26 -
Introductions Are In Order!
Mark your calendars now! We are
getting excited to help launch a nationwide introduction
of a new and exceptional quality line from
General Cigar Company. This will give you the
opportunity to be among the first customers
in the country to taste this new line. We had
the opportunity to taste them at the Retail
Tobacco convention in Las Vegas last month
and, along with Oliva’s Nub, these were the
most enthusiastically received and talked about
new products at the show.
Why are we not telling you more about this
new line? Well, it’s simple. We have been
contacted directly by General Cigar to be
among the first to introduce these new cigars
and it is going to make a lot of other US
tobacco retailers really mad. This event will also
include some great humidor giveaways, free
cigars and we will have some munchies here
for this event as well. Keep an eye open
for our newsletter in September for complete
details.
This will be fun. [ return to top ] |
